Abstract Details
Purpose:
To demonstrate a new diffractive multifocal corneal inlay (DMCI) for the treatement of presbyopia.
Setting:
Diffractive Optics Group (Universidad de Politécnica de Valencia-Universidad de Valencia).
Methods:
he DMCI consists on a small aperture disc having an array of micro-holes to allow the flow of nutrients through it to the cells of the corneal stroma. These microholes, instead of being randomly distributed as in previous designs of small aperture inlays (Kamra), are distributed inside the open zones of a Fresnel zone plate to create a diffractive near focus. A complete theoretical characterization of the new design was performed. DMCI were validated by in vitro testing in an optical bench.
Results:
The DMCI, performance was compared against a small aperture inlay with the dimensions of the Kamra, both models were replicated on a Liquid Crystal in a Silicon SLM. The experimental polychromatic PSF along the optical axis shows that DMCI has a better performance than Kamra in whole range of vergences. We have also tested the image forming capabilities of DMCI under white-light illumination.
Conclusions:
A new concept of amplitude corneal inlay for the treatment of presbyopia has been presented. In the DMCI the harmful and undesired diffractive effects of the conventional small aperture inlay are turned in an advantage by creating a true near focus. Further clinical investigations are required to validate these principles.
