Abstract Details

Purpose:

The objective of a successful vision-restoring surgery lies not only in gaining visual acuity lines, but also vision quality. We report our experiences in implanting multifocal intraocular Wavefront-Designed lenses in presbyopic patients with acquired cataract, and assess their postoperative visual outcomes.

Setting:

Private Practice in Querceta (Lucca), Italy and ambulatory surgical center in San Rossore Medical Center, Pisa, Italy

Methods:

Interventional clinical prospective study, which evaluated the vision quality of patients who have implanted with a new engineered intraocular lens between 2015 and 2016. This IOL has an optical aspheric profile created with a wavefront engineering process that allow to increase the depth of focus in order to generate a progressive multifocality (continuum of foci) correcting presbyopia. Preoperative and postoperative refractive measurements including spherical equivalent and astigmatism, intraocular pressure (IOP)measurement, fundus examination, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) analysis of contrast sensitivity, wavefront measurements were performed.

Results:

One month after surgery, uncorrected distance vision acuity was 20/40 or better in 100% eyes. Contrast sensitivity levels were high. The majority of patients were spectacle-independent for near, intermediate, and distance vision, and no one reported halos or glare.

Conclusions:

Our study suggest that this kind of IOL provide a good BCVA, UNVA and contrast sensitivity, as confirmed by visual function questionnaire. It also demonstrates that these IOLs can be used in patients regardless of their preoperative corneal spherical aberration.
