Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate intraocular straylight and contrast sensitivity in patients who have undergone implantation of a bioanalogic intraocular lens.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Most, Czech Republic
Methods:
Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were tested in 12 patients and straylight in 20 patients aged from 44 to 80 years (mean age of 65 years, 5 women and 15 men). All subjects underwent cataract surgery with implantation of a bioanalogic IOL (WIOL-CF, MEDICEM Technology s.r.o.). Contrast sensitivity was tested at spatial frequencies 1.5; 3.0; 6.0; 12.0 and 18.0 cpd under different lighting conditions (photopic, mesopic and mesopic with glare). Straylight was measured with a C-Quant straylight meter (OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH) and results were compared with population norms. The subjects included standard cataract patients excluding amblyopia.
Results:
Mean monocular postoperative CDVA, DCIVA, and DCNVA were of 0.07, 0.27 and 0.39 logMAR, respectively. Photopic contrast sensitivity exceeded population norms for healthy subjects whereas mesopic contrast sensitivity with and without glare were at the level of EDOF IOLs. The straylight of most patients corresponded to the population norm for healthy subjects. There seems to be a negative correlation between contrast sensitivity and straylight (the higher the contrast sensitivity, the lower the straylight).
Conclusions:
WIOL-CF provides very good distance and intermediate visual acuity and an acceptable near visual acuity. Contrast sensitivity under photopic lighting conditions is excellent and good under mesopic lighting conditions with and without glare. The straylight was within normal limit for healthy subjects, which could explain low incidence of adverse optical phenomena after WIOL-CF implantation. WIOL-CF is a good option for patients who are looking for high level of spectacle independence, good contrast sensitivity and low incidence of adverse optical phenomena.
