Abstract Details

Purpose:

A diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) has been developed using echelette and achromatic design features to provide patients an extended range of functional vision for far, intermediate and near distances. We report our experience about the impact of residual astigmatism and spherical equivalent (SE) on visual acuity after implantation of the TECNIS® Symƒony IOL.

Setting:

Multicenter study sites from Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Spain and UK

Methods:

This is a subanalysis of the multicenter CONCERTO study after bilateral implantation of the Tecnis Symfony IOL (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, USA). The sample of eyes was divided into four groups according to the postoperative refractive astigmatism: <0.25 D, 0.25 to <0.5 D, 0.5 to <0.75 D cylinder, and >0.75 D. Another stratification was based on the postoperative SE: within ±0.25 D, within ±0.50 D, within ±0.75 D within ±1.00 D, and within ±2.00 D.

Results:

Binocular uncorrected distance vision (UDVA) in the astigmatism subgroup (192 eyes) was reduced by only 1 line in the group with 0.5 to<0.75 D astigmatism. Binocular uncorrected intermediate and near VA changed from 0.89 to 0.81 and from 0.72 to 0.70 in this group. The orientation of astigmatism had no impact on the tolerance to the residual cylinder. Binocular UDVA in the SE subgroup did not change significantly and only showed a very slight difference of 0.05 between an SE of ±0.25 and ±2.0 D. Uncorrected binocular intermediate and near VAs improved slightly for higher magnitudes of residual SE.

Conclusions:

The Tecnis Symfony IOL provides an added value by the increased good tolerance to postoperative residual refractive errors which is a key factor for ensuring patient satisfaction.
