Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluate validity and repeatability of corneal curvature, anterior chamber depth (ACD) and axial length (AL) measurements of two new devices, one using Scheimpflug technology combined with partial coherence interferometry (Pentacam AXL from Oculus, Germany) and one using swept-source OCT (IOL Master 700 from Zeiss, Germany) to a widely used optical biometer (IOL Master 500 from Zeiss, Germany).

Setting:

Frankfurt University

Methods:

79 eyes of 79 patients were examined before cataract surgery and enrolled in this prospective study. All eyes were measured with the IOL Master 500, the IOL Master 700 and with the Pentacam AXL. All eyes were measured two times with each device. Primary outcome was axial length measurement; secondary outcomes were corneal curvature and anterior chamber depth measurements. The results were statistically compared by Bland-Altmann plots.

Results:

The Bland-Altmann analysis of axial length measurements with the IOL Master 500 and IOL Master 700 showed a mean difference of 0.008 mm; p=0.05. For measurements with the IOL Master 500 and Pentacam AXL we found a mean difference of 0.026 mm; p=0.75. For Pentacam AXL and the IOL Master 700 we found a mean difference of -0,019 mm; p=0.06. There was no significant difference in terms of repeatibility. Highest reliability of measurements for axial length measurements was achieved with the IOL Master 700. There was no significant difference between measurements of corneal curvature and ACD for all devices.

Conclusions:

There was no statistically significant difference in compared biometric parameters performed with all three devices. Similar cohorts could be measured with any of the three devices for determination of above mentioned parameters.
