Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare vision specific health-related quality of life in myopic patients who had undergone phakic IOL implantation (pIOL) with that of highly myopic (>-6.00D) patients who had not undergone surgical correction (intraocular or cornea/laser) of myopia.

Setting:

Eye Laser Suite, Mater Private Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.

Methods:

Quality of life was measured with the using the National Eye Institute 25 item visual function questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) either at least 14 months following pIOL implantation or in untreated highly myopic patients. Postoperative refraction and distance visual acuity (unaided and aided) at last review were noted.

Results:

41 patients were assessed at least 14 months following pIOL implantation (Collamer lens or Artiflex lens). 30 patients with high myopia (over-6.00 Dioptres) who had not undergone surgical correction of myopia were also assessed. The scores for general vision, near activities, distance activities, vision specific social functioning, mental health and role difficulties and peripheral vision were significantly higher in the pIOL group than in the untreated highly myopic group (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney U test). The other scores did not show a significant difference between the groups (p ?0.05).

Conclusions:

pIOL implantation may offer significant medium term vision-related quality-of-life advantages (eg, satisfaction with social functioning and satisfaction with correction) over spectacles/contact lenses for myopia.
