Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of two PiXL protocols for treatment of low-grade myopia.

Setting:

Dept. of Ophthalmology, Ume University Hospital, Ume, Sweden

Methods:

Healthy volunteers with low-grade myopia (-1.50.5D; range -0.5 - -2.6 D) underwent epi-on PiXL treatment: In topical anesthesia, isotonic riboflavin was applied every 90 seconds for 10 minutes, and a circular central 4-mm zone of the cornea was irradiated with 30mW/cm2 for 16:40 minutes (15 J/cm2). So far, 37 eyes of 19 patients were treated, of which 12 eyes (6 patients) were treated in room air (20% O2) and 25 eyes (13 patients) in 94.31.3% O2 (high oxygen group). Data for uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), subjective refraction, spherical equivalent (SphEq) and corneal endothelial cell count (ECC) will be presented.

Results:

In the room air group, a slight increase in SphEq was seen at 1 month (+0.330.15D) whereas a more pronounced effect was seen in the 95% O2 group (+1.180.48D; P<0.001). The UCVA increased by 0.130.17 and 0.600.27 LogMAR, respectively (P<0.001). In the high oxygen group, the UCVA at 1 month was 0.110.19 LogMAR. No reduction in ECC or other adverse effects were seen in either group.

Conclusions:

Based on the preliminary results of this ongoing study, a reduction of myopia of about 1 D can be achieved with a 4-mm epi-on PiXL treatment of 15 J/cm2 in a high oxygen environment. The long-term durability of the effect remains to be evaluated.
