Abstract Details

Purpose:

Ophthalmic Surgery Intelligent Robotic Integrated System (OSIRIS) is a robotic remotely controlled surgery device designed to overcome some of the major risks and pitfalls of traditional surgery. The apparatus integrates both diagnostic and surgical instruments in order to maximize the surgical accuracy, to promote self-training, to ensure high sterility standards, and to reduce human errors.

Setting:

Istituto Laser Microchirurgia Oculare (ILMO), Brescia Italy; Brescia University, Italy

Methods:

OSIRIS provides a network among different surgical and diagnostic systems such as the femtolaser, the phacoemulsification, the surgical instruments, the optical coherence tomography, the microscope, the exoskeleton of the machine, and the surgeon. The instruments are supplied as a disposable pack ensuring the sterility of the entire process to realize a closed circuit excluding the possibility of contamination from the environment. The device is guided by a remote control pad.

Results:

OSIRIS performs surgery モin a close system wayヤ even while used in different locations. Compared to the traditional surgery methods OSIRIS works with an higher truthfulness of movements avoiding human inaccuracy. The control unit allows to perform hand movements on patients, students, colleagues, and operating rooms far away from base.

Conclusions:

OSIRIS in a new innovative device which can change the way to conceive surgery. OSIRIS assumes and assembles different technologies optimizing their advantages and improving their usage. Compared to the traditional surgery, OSIRIS has an easier management as it doesn't require the operating theater while using disposable instrument packs. OSIRIS will allow the surgeons to practice with high standard of accuracy and it will also be a perfect tool for driving educational and practical courses even from remote locations.
