Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe refractive outcomes after the suction loss in small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).

Setting:

El-Gowhara eye center

Methods:

Retrospective, comparative study. Patients who experienced suction loss during early learning curve of small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) were divided randomly into two groups. Group (A) suction loss occurred after the side-cutting creation and posterior lentiucle cute, suction was reapplied, and the procedure was completed and Group (B) patients who preferred to postpone the procedure one week later. Manifest refraction was measured six weeks postoperatively and compared.

Results:

This study included 26 eyes with suction loss during SMILE technique. Group A (12 eyes): suction loss occurred after the side-cutting creation and posterior lenticule cute (suction was reapplied, and the procedure was completed). Group B (14 eyes) patients who preferred to postpone the procedure one week later. At six weeks postoperative, there was statistically significant difference in refraction outcomes between the two groups with a hyperopic shift in group A compared to group B.

Conclusions:

Good refraction outcomes were achieved with delayed small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) after suction loss for one week.
