Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the central macular thickness in young myopes in South India and to determine its association with axial length.

Setting:

M N Eye Tertiary care Hospital, Chennai, TamilNadu, India.

Methods:

102 eyes of 102 patients from South India aged between 10-40 years were divided into three groups - low, moderate and high myopia. All the patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination of the anterior and posterior segment that included measurement of axial length as well. Patients were also subjected to assessment of of macular thickness using Spectral Domain OCT. Association between the central sub-field macular thickness, refractive error and axial length was analysed.

Results:

The mean refractive error in low, moderate and high myopia groups was -2.06 ± -0.8D, -4.39 ± -1.05D and -8.08 ± -3.36D respectively. The mean central sub-field macular thickness of the three groups was 233.84 ± 20.82µ, 241.42 ± 20.43µ and 239.71 ± 25.66µ. The axial length ranged from 22mm to 29mm with a mean of 24.84 ± 1.22 mm and was found to be more in higher myopes.

Conclusions:

The central sub field thickness of macula did not seem to vary significantly with grade of myopia or the axial length of these patients. However, axial length showed a positive correlation with the refractive error.
