Session Date/Time: Tuesday 10/10/2017 | 08:00-10:30

Paper Time: 08:18

Venue: Room 4.6

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study models of concentration decay in the anterior chamber in order to better understand the duration of antibacterial efficacy of intracameral administration of prophylactic antibiotics.

Setting:

York Finch Eye Associates, and the University of Toronto.

Methods:

Models of aqueous turnover were applied to intracameral antibiotic molecular size and administration techniques, and the results studied to enhance our understanding of IC antibiotic decay in the AC.

Results:

Graphs of antibiotic concentration decay were drawn illustrating what happens under various assumptions. It is initially surprising to discover that concentrations of antibiotic exceeding the MIC90 of common bacteria may not last over 4 hours in the AC using some common protocols. The results will be compared to experimental observation to identify which models most closely match clinical observation.

Conclusions:

The study of models of intracameral antibiotic concentration decay can enhance our understanding of the effects of our current protocols and suggest better practices.
