Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine the development of visually disturbing posterior capsular opacification (PCO) in eyes implanted with hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses, with and without hydrophobic surface properties.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Linköping University Hospital, Sweden. This is the only eye clinic offering cataract surgery and Nd:YAG laser treatment in the uptake area.

Methods:

Digital clinical records of cataract surgeries with implantation of a hydrophilic IOL were reviewed. 300 consecutive eyes were identified for each of 3 IOL types implanted: Akreos Adapt and Akreos Adapt AO (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY USA(), and Asphina 409M (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germay). Eyes with capsular or zonular damage were excluded. Patient birth dates and dates of surgery were recorded. For a period of 3 years, Nd:YAG laser treatments due to visually disturbing PCO as well as patient deaths were extracted from the records and Kaplan-Meyer survival charts were constructed.

Results:

Three years after surgery the number of Nd:YAG laser treatments were 68 (Akreos Adapt) and 53 (Akreos Adapt AO). In the Asphina 409M group 44 Nd:YAG laser treatments were identified ad abstract submission deadline. 3 years follow-up time for all Asphina 409M eyes will be reached at beginning of September 2017.

Conclusions:

This study is the first long-term follow-up of need for Nd:YAG laser treatment for visually disturbing PCO with the IOL Asphina 409M, featuring hydrophobic surface properties claimed to be advantageous for preventing PCO development. At time of ESCRS congress all study data will be collected and a full 3-year comparison with two hydrophilic acrylic IOLs without hydrophobic surface properties will be presented then.
