Abstract Details

Purpose:

A retrospective comparative-effectiveness study of corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and refractive error (RE) following 3,561 same-day bilateral cataract surgeries (SDB) and 13,711 different-day bilateral (DDB) surgeries. We tested two hypotheses: (1) among DDB patients, outcomes in the 2nd eyes were no different than in the 1st; and (2) averaged between each patient’s two eyes, outcomes did not differ between SDB and DDB patients.

Setting:

Kaiser Permanente, Northern California, 2013-15.

Methods:

Comparison of SDB to DDB patients using conditional logistic regression analysis to account for the surgeon and patient-level factors.

Results:

Ocular comorbidities were slightly more prevalent in DDB patients. Postoperative CDVA was 20/20 or better in 49% of DDB 1st eyes, 49% of DDB 2nd eyes, 53% of SDB right eyes, and 52% of SDB left eyes. Emmetropia ( -0.5 to 0 D) was achieved in 61% of 1st DDB eyes, 61% of 2nd DDB eyes, 63% of SDB right eyes, and 62% of SDB left eyes. After adjustment, average postoperative RE was no different in SDB compared with DDB patients (compared with emmetropia: odds ratio for ametropia was 1.02 with confidence interval 0.92-1.12).

Conclusions:

We found no evidence for differences in postoperative CDVA and RE following SDB and DDB cataract surgeries.
