Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of a swept-source based optical biometer (SSO) in the axial length (AL) measurement for advanced cataract patients

Setting:

Prospective case series / Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand

Methods:

All cataract patients who were unable to obtain the AL measurement using standard optical biometer (IOLMaster 500) were included in this study. The SSO (IOLMaser 700) was used for the AL measurement. The immersion ultrasound (IU) was performed to verify the result of the AL measurement. The cataract was graded using standard LOCIII score. The correlation between the cataract density and the successful measurement of AL by the SSO was analyzed.

Results:

64 eyes were included in this study. The AL of 56 eyes (87.5%, 95%CI: 77.23-93.53%) were measurable by the SSO. The AL measurement obtained by the SSO was not statistically significant difference and in a good agreement with the IU. There was no statistically significant correlation between the cataract types and a capability of the SSO in the AL measurement (p>0.05). However, there was a trend towards an incapable measure of AL in cataract with high scores of lens opacity.

Conclusions:

The efficacy of the SSO was excellent. 87.5% of advance cataract patients were able to obtain the AL measurement using the SSO.
