Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate treatment outcomes of keratoconus patients undergoing topo-guided photorefractive keratectomy combined with cross-linking.

Setting:

The study was conducted in Ophthalmology Clinic, Centre of Postgraduate Medical Education and Eye Microsurgery Centre LASER, Warsaw, Poland

Methods:

60 patients with diagnosed keratoconus (stage 1 and 2 in Amsler's classification) age 18-39 treated with topo-guided photorefractive keratectomy combined with cross-linking (L+T+CXL). Uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity (UVA, BCVA), maximal keratometry (Kmax), astigmatism (Ast), minimal pachymetry (CT) were evaluated before treatment and up to 36 months after. Efficacy, safety and complications were also evaluated.

Results:

Improvement of UVA (+0,20 +/-0,16); BCVA (+0,15 +/-0,14), Kmax (-2,30 +/-2,26 D), Ast (-1,90 +/-1,52 D) was observed during 36 months. CT was stable during whole period of observation.

Conclusions:

Patients with mild keratoconus treated with cross-linking can additionally undergo topo-guided photorefractive keratectomy in order to achieve better visual outcomes. The method is safe and efficient. There was no progression observed during the study. Vast majority of complications and side effects were transient. Severe complications were observed in few patients.
