Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the refractive results of transPRK (Group A) with a recently described alcohol assisted blunt PRK technique (Group B)

Setting:

Vision Ooglaseren

Methods:

Retrospective review of cases operated with one of both techniques since started performing transPRK and with at least 3 months follow-up.. Analysis of refractive results and discomfort after the treatment

Results:

Group A had 29 eyes (16 patients)and group B 31 eyes (17 patients). Group A had a safety index (SI) of 1,01, and efficacy index (EI) of 0,93; 90% of eyes within 0,5 diopters of planned refraction and 10,3% of eyes losing 1 line of best corrected distance vision (BCDV). Group B had a SI of 1, and EI of 0,9; 90% of eyes within 0,5 diopters of planned refraction and 16,1% of eyes losing 1 line of BCDV. Discomfort was greater in the first two postop days after transPRK but resolved quicker than in blunt PRK.

Conclusions:

Both techniques were equally effective. Alcohol assisted blunt PRK had a greater number of patients losing 1 line of BCDV. Unexpectedly transPRK produces initially more discomfort that an alcohol assisted technique.
