Effect of femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis on the density of choroicapillary in myopic patients

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate changes in density of choroicapillary (CCD) after femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (Femto-LASIK) in myopic patients.

Setting:

The study was prospectively conducted from July 2016 to January 2017 among patients at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University.

Methods:

We enrolled 48 myopic patients (95 eyes) who were eligible for Femto-LASIK surgery. The CCD was measured by Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in the Central 1-mm-diameter Circle Region of the Macular Fovea (CCD1) and the 1 mm to 3 mm Ring-like Region of the Macular fovea (CCD1-3) preoperatively as baseline and at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months postoperatively. Other data collected included demographic information, the amplitude of accommodation (AA), intraocular pressure, axial length, and spherical equivalent. The data were analyzed with repeated measures analysis of variance, Bonferroni test and correlation analysis.

Results:

At preoperatively and 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months postoperatively, the CCD1 were 63.34% ± 0.20%, 61.88% ± 0.24%, 62.45% ±0.19%, 63.12% ± 0.21%, 63.04% ± 0.22%. It was significantly lower postoperatively compared with the preoperative. However, the CCD1 decreased firstly and then increased, similar trend also occured in CCD1-3. CCD1 at 1m postoperatively and CCD1-3 at 1w postoperatively had recovered to the baseline statistically. Besides it, there was no obvious correlation between CCD and AA, spherical equivalent.

Conclusions:

The CCD decreased following Femto-LASIK in myopic patients which was a temporary change rather than a really irreversible damage to choroicapillary and the recovery time was longer in fovea than in surrounding area.
