Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of the CONCERTO study regarding the influence of postoperative monovision on visual acuity, photic phenomena and spectacle use after bilateral implantation of the Tecnis Symfony intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

University Brest Hospital (France) Multicenter study sites from Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Spain and UK.

Methods:

This is a subanalysis of the multicenter CONCERTO study after bilateral implantation of the Tecnis Symfony IOL (Johnson & Johnson Vision, Santa Ana, USA). The sample of eyes was divided into six groups according to the postoperative magnitude of monovision (difference between eyes: 0 D, 01.0 D. Distance, intermediate and near visual acuity as well as the incidence and severity of photic phenomena and the use of spectacles.

Results:

Binocular uncorrected visual acuity and spectacle independence across distances was highest between 0.5 and 1.0 D of monovision. The lowest incidence of halos and glare was found at monovision levels between 0.5 and 0.75 D

Conclusions:

Mini-monovision with a difference of appr. 0.75 D between both eyes revealed the best visual outcome with regard to a balance between visual acuity, spectacle independence and visual symptoms.
