Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate implantation of Tecnis Symfony or Tecnis Symfony toric intraocular lens (IOL) in one eye and Tecnis Multifocal IOL with +2.75 addition in other eye after cataract or refractive lens surgery.

Setting:

Eye Hospital Svjetlost, Zagreb, Croatia

Methods:

Eleven patients had cataract or refractive lens exchange (RLE) surgery with implantation of Tecnis Symfony or Tecnis Symfony Toric IOL in the first eye and Tecnis Multifocal with +2,75 addition in other. Bifocal lens was implanted in order to improve patient’s near vision. Mean age was 46.6±14.9 years, six females and 5 males. Five patients had cataract and six were RLE patients. Symfony toric was implanted in four and Symfony IOL in seven patients. Three patiens had moderate amblyopia in one eye. Uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity were measured. Follow up was at least three months.

Results:

Mean postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) with Symfony lenses was 0.85±0.19 (three amblyopic eyes) and 0.95±0.12 in Tecnis MFIOL group. Binocular UDVA was 0.96±0.08. Mean uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) in Symfony group was 0.89±0.10 and 0.96±0.08 in Tecnis MFIOL group. Binocular UNVA was 0.96±0.08. Uncorrected binocular intermediate visual acuity was 1.0 in all patients. One patient asked reading glasses for small print, one patient is scheduled for LASIK due to residual astigmatism. Nd YAG laser capsulotomy was performed in two eyes. Patients did not complain at halos and glare.

Conclusions:

In patients who were not completely satisfied with near vision after implantation of Tecnis Symfony or Symfony toric extended range of vision IOL in one eye, implantation of Tecnis Multifocal IOL with +2.75 D near addition is viable option. Patients have excellent binocular vision at all distances without serious complaints at visual disturbances or difference in vision between eyes.
