Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the use of different techniques for superficial keratopigmentation (KTP) for restoring or enhancing the cosmetic appearance of patients with impaired eyes due to several reasons.

Setting:

Vissum Alicante, Spain.

Methods:

215 surgeries using Superficial KTP were performed in 132 eyes (125 patients). Between 2003 and 2017 the techniques used were Superficial Manual KTP and Superficial Automated KTP. Superficial KTP was used as the first choice alone, in combination with other surgical techniques (Femtosecond assisted KTP, Manual intralamellar KTP), or as a second stage procedure in previously pigmented eyes.

Results:

Overall 132 eyes, 67 (51%) were operated once not needing more interventions, 35 (27%) were re-operated one time, 26 (20%) twice, and 4 (3%) three times. As first choice, Superficial Automated KTP was done in 49% of the cases and Superficial Manual KTP in 19%, while Superficial KTP in combination with intrastromal techniques were used in 32% of them. As second stage procedure, Superficial KTP was used in 84% of the cases, being 72% Superficial Automated KTP and 12% superficial KTP surgeries combined with intrastromal techniques.

Conclusions:

Superficial KTP has improved since the introduction of automated devices. This procedure provides the patients the possibility to improve the cosmetic appearance of their affected eyes avoiding more drastic alternative treatments.
