Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the degree of pupil diameter changes after femtosecond laser emission during femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS).

Setting:

S.N. Fyodorov MNTK “Eye Microsurgery Complex”, Cheboksary branch, Russian Federation.

Methods:

Forty eyes of 40 patients underwent FLACS. Patients mean age was 68.21±13.21 years (from 54 to 86 years). During the preoperative preparation every patient was instilled by antibiotic, antiseptic, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and mydriatic eye drops 20 minutes before the operation. First step of FLACS was performed on the LenSx laser system (Alcon, USA), second step – the phacoemulsification was performed on the Infinity vision system (Alcon, USA). Spherical IOLs MIOL-2 (Reprer-NN, Russia) were implanted to all patients. Before the first step start and after its end pupil diameter was measured by the interface of LenSx laser.

Results:

No complications were detected during the operation and in postoperative period. Mean size of pupil diameter before the first step of FLACS was 6.78±0.93 mm (from 4.7 to 8.0 mm). After the first step the mean size of pupil diameter was 6.74±0.97 mm (from 5.0 to 8.2 mm) (p=0.65).

Conclusions:

Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with mydriatic during preoperative preparation allows to get a persistent mydriasis and lowers the risk of getting miosis after femtosecond laser emission during FLACS.
