Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of optical phenomena after implantation of different monofocal IOLs and multifocal IOLs after cataract or refractive surgery.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

In this ongoing prospective clinical study 61 patients have been examined binocularly (8 patients CT Asphina (Carl Zeiss Meditec), 6 patients Aspira MC 6125 AS (HumanOptics), 11 patients Tecnis Symfony (AMO), 18 patients Miniwell (SIFI Medtech), 12 patients ACRYSOF IQ PanOptix (Alcon) and 6 patients AT Lisa tri (Carl Zeiss Meditec)). Both size and intensity were determined with a computer-based simulator (Halo and Glare Simulator, Eyeland Design Network GmbH, Vreden, Germany) graduated on a scale of 0 to 100.

Results:

The mean values concerning the size of halo were 35,5(±22,0) for Symfony,35,1(±19,7) for Panoptix,33,2(±9,5) for AT Lisa tri,19,1(±22,6) for Miniwell, 5,6(±10,5) for Asphina and 24,7(±16,3) for Aspira.The mean intensity values of halo were 50,0(±27,8) for Symfony,50,6(±19,3) for Panoptix,45,3(±19,1) for AT Lisa tri,30,4(±29,3) for Miniwell,10,8(±20,4) for Asphina and 30,2(±15,0) for Aspira.The assessment of the size of glare shows the following values:Symfony:22,0(±21,4),Panoptix:15,1(±13,2),AT Lisa tri:19,0(±15,0),Miniwell:10,8(±12,6),Asphina:10,3(±9,9),Aspira:14(±19,6).The mean intensities of glare were:Symfony 37,5(±20,3), Panoptix 36,8(±20,7),AT Lisa tri 33,7(±23,2),Miniwell 34,1(±29,9),Asphina 35,3(±22,1),Aspira 26,2(±25,0).

Conclusions:

The previous results show that there are differences between monofocal IOLs and multifocal IOLs concerning the perception of photic phenomena such as halo and glare. Those differences are noticable both in size and intensity.
