Abstract Details

Purpose:

This study is to compare the accuracy of the axial length (AL) measurement methods in patients with cataract using modern optical and ultrasound biometry methods for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation.

Setting:

Moscow Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases.

Methods:

The study included 132 patients (264 eyes), aged 67,3 ± 4,29 years with different types of lens opacity, normal corneas, no previous ocular surgery. All these patients underwent pre-operative AL measurement for IOL power calculation with four modern optical biometers: IOL-Master 500, LENSTAR LS 900, AL-scan, Galilei G6, as well as contact and immersion ultrasound biometry.

Results:

AL measurements were obtained in all cases using ultrasound (contact and immersion) methods, in 81,5% cases - IOL-Master 500 (215 eyes), 79,55% - LS 900 (210 eyes), 88,6% - AL-scan (234 eyes), 77,3% - Galilei G6 (204 eyes). An analysis of 191 cases of successful optical biometry showed that the mean value of AL measurement obtained by contact ultrasound biometry was 25,17 ± 2,5 mm; immersion ultrasound biometry - 25,21 ± 2,31, optical biometry on the device IOL-Master 500 - 25,25 ± 2,29, LENSTAR - 25,27 ± 2,29, AL- scan - 25,23 ± 2,26, Galilei G6 - 25,26 ± 2,27.

Conclusions:

Despite the high accuracy and reproducibility of optical biometry ultrasound method remains the only possible way for AL measurements regardless of lens opacity. The effectiveness of AL measurement methods depends on cataract density, lenght of the eye and shape of posterior pole of the eye. The efficacy of optical biometry methods depends on location of opacity in the lens. The results of immersion biometry can be used in conjunction with optical biometry for IOL power calculation.
