Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the accuracy of different intraocular lens (IOL) calculation formulas available on the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) post-refractive surgery IOL power calculator for the prediction of IOL power after previous corneal refractive laser surgery for myopia.

Setting:

Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, and Retina Total Eye Care, Driebergen, the Netherlands.

Methods:

Patients who previously had laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for myopia and subsequently had uneventful cataract surgery with a multifocal IOL (SN6AD1 or SN6AD3) implantation, were included in this study. The accuracy of the Masket, Modified Masket, Barrett True-K, Shammas, Haigis-L and Barrett True-K no History formulas and the average of all formulas was analyzed and compared with each other, using the surgeon personalized IOL constants.

Results:

Sixty-four eyes were available for analysis. All formulas, expect for the Masket and the Barrett True-K, had a mean numerical error (MNE) which was significant different from zero (P<0.001). The Masket and Barrett True-K formulas had the lowest MNE (-0.07D and -0.13D, respectively, P<0.001). The Shammas and the Haigis-L formulas had the highest median absolute prediction errors (0.54D and 0.46D, respectively, P≤0.02) and the lowest proportion of eyes within ±0.50D from the predicted refraction (48.4% and 54.7%, respectively).

Conclusions:

In our dataset, using personalized lens constants derived for normal population, the Masket and the Barrett True-K formulas had the most favorable prediction outcomes, while the Shammas and the Haigis-L formula had the least favorable prediction outcomes in eyes with previous LASIK or PRK for myopia.
