Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the visual function by means of the defocus curve and the intraocular aberrometric profile in eyes undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of two different models of diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL)

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology (OFTALMAR), Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain

Methods:

A total of 50 eyes of 27 patients with ages ranging between 48 and 76 years old and undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery were enrolled in the study. Two different groups were created depending on the trifocal diffractive IOL implanted: group A, including 31 eyes implanted with the FineVision IOL (Physiol), and group B including 19 eyes implanted with the PanOptix IOL (Alcon). The outcome of surgery was evaluated at 3 months after surgery by analyzing the visual function by means of the defocus curve, manifest refraction, and the intraocular aberrometry (iTrace system)

Results:

Postoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was significantly better in group B (0.14±0.13 vs. 0.05±0.07, p=0.01), whereas postoperative uncorrected near visual acuity was significantly better in group A (0.03±0.07 vs. 0.08±0.05, p=0.008). The postoperative spherical equivalent was within ±0.50 in 83.9% and 100% of eyes in groups A and B, respectively. The defocus curve showed significantly worse visual acuity for defocus level of -1D in group B (p=0.004) and for -2 (p=0.016) and -2.5 D (p<0.001) in group A. Concerning intraocular aberrations, more negative spherical aberration was found in group A (p=0.011)

Conclusions:

Both trifocal diffractive IOLs provide an effective restoration of the visual function, with functional levels of distance, near and intermediate visual acuity and no significant degradation of intraocular optics. Better intermediate distance is achieved with the FineVision IOL whereas the near vision is better with the PanOptix IOL. More studies are needed to corroborate these findings in the long term.
