Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate 12-month post-operative outcomes of moderate and highly myopic eyes with transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TE-PRK) corrections using SCHWIND AMARIS (SA) 1050 with upgraded laser beam profile

Setting:

Laser Refractive Clinic

Methods:

Retrospective case series. The outcomes of 2242 myopic TE-PRK treatments performed with the SA1050 excimer laser with SmartSurfACE beam profile were evaluated at 12 months postoperatively. Analysis was divided into moderate (up to -8D, N=1919) and high myopia (from -8D, N=323). Refractive and visual comparisons of manifest refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and safety (change of CDVA from baseline).

Results:

At one year, UDVA ≥20/20 achieved by 89% and 64% of the moderate and high myopia subgroups (p<0.0001); ≥20/40 achieved by 100% and 94% of the moderate and high myopia subgroups (p=0.001)); CDVA ≥20/20 achieved by 97% and 88% of the moderate and high myopia subgroups (p=0.001); astigmatism was 0.20±0.26D for moderate myopia versus 0.31±0.31D for high myopia, p=0.01; 19% and 23% of the moderate and high myopia subgroups gained lines of CDVA (p=0.02). No ≥2 lines loss of CDVA in high myopia group and 0.23% (2 eyes) in moderate myopia group. No retreatments were required.

Conclusions:

Myopic transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy with Schwind Amaris (SA) 1050 with SmartSurfACE beam profile at 12 month postoperatively showed good outcomes with 89% achieving 20/20 UCDVA in moderate myopia (≤ -8D) and 64% in high myopia (> -8D). Excellent results with TE-PRK using the SA1050 are possible for moderate and high myopia using an upgraded beam profile. TE-PRK shown to be safe and effective offering an alternative to LASIK.
