Purpose:

To explore childhood visual impairment and blindness in Bantul District, Yogyakarta Special Province, Indonesia, including the number of cases, the causes, and the prevalence of visual impairment and/or blindness.

Setting:

Bantul District, Yogyakarta Special Province, Indonesia.

Methods:

This epidemiology study used key informant method and started with a mobile training to key informants as community volunteers using Gadjah Mada Eye Examination Flipchart before they performed the screening in their own areas. Following the screening, childhood visual impairment and blindness was examined in vision camps as a clinical site for eye examination by ophthalmologists in Bantul District.

Results:

Successfully-recruited 678 community health volunteers from 17 sub districts were trained by experts. There were eight vision camps held to accommodate all 17 sub districts. It was found that 49.44% of 631 patients had visual impairment. Blindness was found in 76 right eyes and 74 left eyes. The most common cause of visual impairment/blindness in the patients was refractive error (32.04%), followed by lens abnormality (15.86%), and whole globe abnormality (11.65%). The prevalence of children visual impairment and/or blindness in Bantul was 0.1%.

Conclusions:

The epidemiological study using key informant method was successful to find that the prevalence of childhood visual impairment and/or blindness is 0.1%. The most common cause of visual impairment in children in Bantul District is refractive error, followed by lens abnormality.
