Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of PiXL treatment for low-grade myopia.

Setting:

Umeå University Hospital, Umeå, Sweden.

Methods:

In this ongoing study, healthy volunteers with low-grade myopia (-1.6±0.5D; range -0.5 - -2.5 D) underwent epi-on PiXL treatment: In topical anesthesia, isotonic riboflavin was applied every 90 seconds for 10 minutes, and a circular central 4-mm zone of the cornea was irradiated with 30mW/cm2 for 16:40 minutes (15 J/cm2) in 95.1±1.7% O2. The present material includes 37 eyes of 23 patients. Data for uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), subjective refraction, spherical equivalent (SphEq) and corneal endothelial cell count (ECC) will be presented.

Results:

A reduced myopia was seen with an increase in SphEq at 1, 3 and 6 months (+1.09±0.50D; +1.09±0.54D and +0.86±0.48D, respectively; P<0.001). The UCVA increased by 0.44±0.30, 0.51±0.32 and 0.61±0.22 LogMAR, at 1, 3 and 6 months, respectively (P<0.001). Both the SphEq and the UCVA were unaltered from 1 to 6 months (P=n.s.) No reduction in ECC or other adverse effects were seen.

Conclusions:

Based on the 6-month results of this ongoing study, a reduced myopia of just above 1 D can be achieved with a 4-mm epi-on PiXL treatment of 15 J/cm2 in a high oxygen environment. The effect is stable up to 6 months.
