Abstract Details

Purpose:

To retrospectively evaluate the YAG capsulotomy rates due to posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) in Japanese eyes.

Setting:

Nishi Eye Hospital, Osaka, Japan

Methods:

The 1- year, 2-year, and 3-year YAG capsulotomy rates of monofocal IOLs (Technis Z9002, AMO), bifocal IOLs (SN6AD3, Alcon), and trifocal IOLs (FineVision, PhysIOL) with sharp edges after FLACS and also manual surgery were investigated.

Results:

The 2-year postoperative YAG rates of monofocal IOLs, bifocal IOLs, and trifocal IOLs were 7.4% (2 eyes among 27 eyes), 10.5% (4 eyes among 38 eyes), 10.5% (4 eyes among 38 eyes) respectively after FLACS and 7.2% (519 eyes among 7212 eyes), 16.9% (14 eyes among 83 eyes), 0% (0 eye among 11 eyes) respectively after manual surgery. There was no significant difference of the YAG rates between the FLACS group and the manual surgery group. The YAG rates will be updated.

Conclusions:

The YAG rates of all investigated IOLs were moderately low. No significant difference of the YAG rates was found between the FLACS group and the manual surgery group. Morphological evaluation of PCO is necessary, though. Further reports of the YAG rates after FLACS with larger sample size during the longer postoperative follow-up are required.
