Abstract Details
Purpose:
To define and compare the REC in LASIK vs. Smile, to possibly explain the refractive performance differences noted between the two.
Setting:
LaserVision.gr Clinical and Research Eye Institute, Athens, Greece
Methods:
In 22 consecutive patients, one eye, randomized had TGL, the contralateral Smile. Digital analysis of the REC to the aimed corneal vertex (ACV), was assessed on the peri-operative Scheimpflug tangential curvature maps, and correlated with refraction, acuity, anterior corneal symmetry indices, scatter, and low contrast sensitivity.
Results:
ACV vs. REC was 130 ± 62 μm in LASIK, but 313 ± 144μm in Smile (P<0,001). Index of Height Decentration (IHD) 0.0142± 0.0113 μm vs. 0.0225±0.0099 μm, objective scatter index (OSI): 1.14±0.82 vs. 1.14±0.82, low contrast sensitivity (LCS) improved in LASIK eyes vs. remained the same in the Smile.
Conclusions:
TGL offered significantly higher effective centration vs. Smile resulting relevant differences in IHD, OSI, and LCS.
