Abstract Details
Purpose:
To demonstrate that PRK without MMC fro refractive errors less than 2.5D dioptries (D) one year or later after LASIK is safe, effective and predictable.
Setting:
Clinica Baviera Palma de Mallorca (Spain) and Clinica Baviera Torino (Italy).
Methods:
A restrospective study on 30 eyes retreated by PRK without MMC on corneal flap for residual myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism one year or later after LASIK was done.Data included spherical equivalent (SE), uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity (UCVA and BCVA), and corneal haze.
Results:
Before PRK, the mean SE was -0.28+/-1.0D (range -2.88, +1.5) and mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.64+/-0.19 (0.20, 0.90) and 0.99+/-0.10 (0.75, 1.2) respectively. 12 months postoperatively, the mean SE was -0.02+/-0.36 (-0.75, +1.25) and the mean UCVA and BCVA were 0.98+/-0.09 (0.80, 1.20) and 1.01+/-0.01 (0.85, 1.20), respectively. The safety index was 1.02 and the efficacy index was 0.98. 93.3% and 96.7% of eyes were within +/-0.50D and +/-1.0D of the attempted correction, respectively. No haze was observed in corneas after PRK without MMC.
Conclusions:
Residual refractive errors of less than 2.5D of myopia or hyperopia and astigmatism after LASIK could be safely and effectively treated by PRK without mitomycin C with high predictability. This prevents postoperative ectasia and avoids the flap related complications.
