Purpose:
To compare the occurence, the number and size of glistenings, when warming and cooling in vitro 9 different hydrophobic acrylic materials
Setting:

Methods:
Glistening measurement was assessed in vitro by counting microvacuoles with an optical microscope at X100 magnification in different acrylic materials used to produce manufactured intraocular lenses, placed at 45°C in a saline solution during 24 hours, than cooled down to 35° C and examined 6 hours later. ImageJ software was used to determine the diameter of glistenings using a sight with a scale set. Whitening was assessed by analysing hydrophobic acrylic buttons placed in pure water at 35°C over 2000 hours, using pictures taken with a camera and analysed every week with the ImageJ software, with arbitrary units.
Results:
Number of microvacuoles varied from 0 to 191/mm²; the diameter of microvacuoles varied from 12 to 54 micromillimiters, depending of the analyzed material . The importance of whitening also varied significantly between the hydrophobic acrylic lenses.
Conclusions:
We found significant differences in glistening formation and whitening for 9 hydrophobic acrylic under experimental warming/cooling conditions.
