Purpose:
To describe the clinical features and etiologies of patients with LSCD
Setting:
Cincinnati Eye Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.
Methods:
Retrospective charts analysis of 738 eyes of 432 patients that were diagnosed with LSCD at a tertiary referral center between 2002 and 2015. Outcome measures included patient demographics, LSCD etiologies, laterality, coexisting ocular diseases, and performed surgical procedures.
Results:
Mean patient age at the first visit was 62 years (range 2-91) and 221 patients were male whereas 211 were female. Diagnosis was bilateral in 70% of the patients. Mean visual acuity at the first visit 20/80 (range NLP-20/20). The main LSCD etiologies were aniridia/variant aniridia (31%), ocular burn (21%), contact lens (17%), Steven-Johnson syndrome (10%), and iatrogenic (6%). Eighty eyes had a hystory of previous failed keratoplasty without ocular surface transplant (OSST). Mean follow-up was 68±55 months. OSST was performed in 251 eyes(34%), and Boston keratoprosthesis in 62 eyes(8%). Cataract (37%) and glaucoma(33%) were the most frequent comorbidities.
Conclusions:
LSCD is a heterogeneous disease secondary to a broad number of etiologies, and it is often under-diagnosed. This study reports novel data about demographics and clinical feature
