Purpose:
To compare visual acuity and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) in patients with low myopia with a spherical equivalent (SE) from -1.0 D to -3.0 D.
Setting:
Bati Goz Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey
Methods:
Results of 48 eyes of 24 patients in the SMILE group and 56 eyes of 28 patients in the FS-LASIK group were evaluated. Visual acuity, spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, and corneal topography before and 6 months after the surgery were analyzed for both groups. Total HOAs, spherical aberrations, coma and trefoil were calculated from topographic data over the 6 mm diameter central corneal zone.
Results:
The mean preoperative SE was -2.78±0.64 D in the SMILE group and -2.84±0.56 D in the FS-LASIK group (p=0.64). Six months after surgery, the mean SE was -0.12±0.22 D, and -0.15±0.18 D, respectively (p=0.52). Postoperative total HOAs, spherical aberration, coma and trefoil increased in both groups. SMILE procedure induced significantly lower corneal HOAs, compared with FS-LASIK surgery.
Conclusions:
SMILE and FS-LASIK result in comparable visual acuity and refractive results. Postoperative HOAs were much lower after SMILE as compared to FS-LASIK in patients with low myopia.
