Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze optical quality outcomes after implantation of intraocular lens (IOL) during cataracts surgery using the Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS, Visiometrics) in three types of IOL of a same family: monofocal Tecnis ZCB00, multifocal ZMB00 and enlarged depth-of-focus Symfony (Abbott Medical Optics).
Setting:
Miguel Servet University Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain
Methods:
70 eyes of 35 patients were implanted with monofocal Tecnis ZCB00 IOL, 80 eyes of 40 patients were implanted with multifocal Tecnis ZMB00 IOL and 40 eyes of 20 patients were impanted with Symfony IOL. All of them were operated by the same ophthalmic surgeon. Optical quality was examined with the OQAS two months after surgery of the second eye. Patients with any other ophthalmological pathology were excluded from this study
Results:
In the monofocal group, the averages were: 61.37 years old, 4.33 mm of measured pupil and 23.30 mm of axial length. In the multifocal group, averages were: 63.25, 4.14 and 23.48 respectively. In the Symfony group, averages were: 65.33, 3.72 and 23.39 respectively. There were no differences between them. The monofocal group achieved better results than the multifocal in: objective scatter index and point spread function. The multifocal group obtained better results than the Symfony in: expected visual acuity with all contrasts, Strehl ratio and modulation transfer function. The seudoaccommodation was better in the Symfony group than the multifocal.
Conclusions:
With Symfony IOL, though values of objective scatter index and point spread function are worse in comparison with monofocal ZCB00 IOL, patients benefit from an adequate near vision without any specific optical correction. On the other hand, multifocal ZMB00 IOL achieve better objective optical quality outcomes than Symfony IOL. However, it is well known that ZMB00 IOL provides lower visual acuity outcomes for intermediate vision.
