Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report on the clinical outcomes with the Tecnis Symfony extended range of vision intraocular lenses in a clinical setting.

Setting:

Optegra Eye Hospitals, UK

Methods:

Observational case series comprising data of 983 implantations of the Tecnis Symfony (AMO) following cataract or refractive lensectomy surgery. The mean ± SD age of the patients was 63±8 years (range 40 to 86 years). Operative and post-operative complications were analysed. Monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and monocular near visual acuity (NVA) was recorded along with subjective refraction data. Data on patient-reported outcomes including spectacle independence and dysphotopsia were also captured. Additionally, in a sub-group of 113 eyes undergoing femtosecond assisted surgery outcomes data were analysed for comparison.

Results:

No operative or post-operative complications were recorded in 99.7% and 94.7% of eyes respectively. Post-operatively, 97% of eyes achieved 20/40 or better UDVA and 66% achieved 20/20 or better UDVA. Post-operative spherical equivalent refraction was within ±1.0D in 97% of cases and within ±0.50D in 83% of cases. In 89% of cases NVA was N6 or better. 80% of the patients reported freedom from the need to wear spectacles and 34% of patients reported being free from troublesome glare or haloes. 100% of patients reported they would be willing to recommend the procedure to family and friends.

Conclusions:

Early observations with this extended range of vision lens demonstrated low complication rates, good levels of vision at multiple distances and high levels of patient satisfaction.
