Changes in posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA) following LASIK for myopic astigmatism using multicolor LED topographer

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the change in magnitude and axis of orientation of posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA) after Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for myopic astigmatism using multicolor LED topographer.

Setting:

Institut de Microcirurgia Ocular (IMO), Barcelona, Spain

Methods:

This retrospective study included 25 eyes of 13 patients which underwent LASIK for the correction of myopic astigmatism ranging from 0.41 to 2.79 Diopters (D). Keratometric astigmatism parameters (magnitude and axis) were measured with Cassini (Cassini; i-Optics, The Hague, The Netherlands) preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Vector analyses were performed. In addition, refractive and visual outcomes were also analysed.

Results:

Spherical equivalent significantly improved (baseline: ‑4.08±1.43; 1 month: ‑0.06±0.18; and 3 months: ‑0.06±0.13) with corresponding significant improvement in UDVA (P < 0.001). The magnitude of anterior and total corneal astigmatism decreased from baseline; however, the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.847 and p=0.240, respectively). PCA showed no significant change from preoperative to 1 and 3-months postoperative levels (preoperatively: -0.37±0.15, 1 month: ‑0.44±0.20; 3 months: ‑0.44±0.19; P > 0.05). The PCA was against‑the‑rule in 79.2% and 66.7% eyes, with‑the‑rule in 0% and 4.2% eyes, and oblique in 20.8% and 29.17% eyes respectively preoperative and 3 months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

After LASIK, magnitude of PCA remained unchanged for patients with myopic astigmatism; however, changes in the axes of orientation were observed in ~30% eyes.
