Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the safety, efficacy, and predictability of LASIK with WaveLight Ex-500 excimer laser performed by a seasoned surgeon (A) and by a novice surgeon(B)
Setting:
BB Eye Foundation, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Methods:
This Prospective study Comprised 44 eyes of 22 consecutive patients.
One eye of each patient was randomly assigned (as determined by coin toss) to receive treatment by Seasoned Surgeon (Grp A) and the other eye received treatment by Novice surgeon (Grp B)
Results:
Mean preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was −1.35 ± 4.07 D (range: 7.63 to 6.00 D) for Grp B eyes and −1.27 ± 4.31 D (range: 7.25 to 6.00 D) for Grp A eyes with no statistically significant difference (P=0.68).
At 6 months postoperative, Mean decimal UCVA was 0.96±0.22 (range: 0.3 to 1.2) for Grp B eyes and 0.98±0.17 (range: 0.6 to 1.2) for Grp A eyes (P=.57).
Mean postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was −0.02± 0.28 diopters (D) (range: −0.75 to +0.75 D) for Grp B eyes and 0.11± 0.91 D (range: −1.00 to +0.75 D) for Grp A eyes (P=.49).
Conclusions:
The safety index (mean postoperative BSCVA/mean preoperative BSCVA) was 1.06 for both Grp A and Grp B. The efficacy index (mean postoperative UCVA/mean preoperative BSCVA) for Grp B eyes was 0.99 compared to 1.01 for Grp A eyes with no statistically significant difference.
