Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe refractive outcomes and trends on safety, efficacy, predictability and complications of LASIK for myopia at a single institution in Singapore from 1998 to 2015.

Setting:

Singapore National Eye Centre

Methods:

Prospective, nonrandomized, single-center study of all patients who underwent myopic LASIK surgery at the Singapore National Eye Centre from 1998 to 2015. Pre- and postoperative refractions, uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were documented. Outcome measures of safety, efficacy, refractive predictability and complications were analysed for mild, moderate, and high myopia according to spherical equivalence (SE) of less than 5.00 diopters (D), 5.00 D or more to less than 10.0 D, and 10.00 D or more, respectively.

Results:

49263 eyes of 27343 patients were included. More than 90.0% of eyes achieved UCVA of 6/12 since 2000. The overall efficacy indices have been higher than 0.90 since 2005 and has improved to higher than 0.95 in the last 5 years. The safety index over time has increased, ranging from 1.06 to 1.13 since 2010. Overall percentage of eyes with loss of 1 line and 2 lines of BCVA was 4.2% and 0.3% respectively. Predictability showed an increasing trend with at least 92.5% of eyes achieving within 1.0D and about 67.2% achieving within 0.5D of attempted correction from 2010 onward.

Conclusions:

This study shows that the outcomes of LASIK have improved over time, attributable to improvements in treatment strategies and better laser technologies. The data shows that LASIK is effective and safe in treating myopia.
