Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the quality of corneal flaps and visual outcomes obtained after FS-LASIK surgery assisted by two different femtosecond lasers: LenSx® vs. Intralase®.
Setting:
Clinica Novovision de Madrid, Universidad Europea de Madrid, Universidad de Alcalá
Methods:
A prospective, observational study.
One hundred myopic eyes that underwent FS-LASIK (using the LenSx® or the Intralase®) aiming for 110 µm flap thickness (FT), and using the same Allegretto® laser, were analyzed 3 months post-op.
The FT was measured at the center and at 16 points along the horizontal axis, in each case, using an AS-OCT (Spectralis®).
Visual function was evaluated in terms of postoperative VA and the residual refractive error. In addition, the mean changes in the total corneal aberrations (pre vs post-op), as well as the post-op corneal coma-like and spherical –like aberrations were analyzed.
Results:
Central FT was higher in the LenSx® goup (127.4± 8.4 vs 123.8±8.4 µm, p=0.02). We found no statistically significant difference in the overall FT between LenSx® (126.6±8.5µm) and Intralase® (124.4±8.25µm) (P>0.05). The intraflap FT standard deviation and the intraflap thickness range, were also similar between both groups (P>0.05), although the FT asymmetry at 2mm eccentricity was lower in the intralase flaps (5.46±4.09 vs 8.43±6.8 µm) (p=0.01).
No significant difference was found in the UCDVA, the residual sphere or in the change in total corneal RMS in both groups (p>0.05)
Conclusions:
Intralase® seems to be more precise in terms of fap thickness homogeneity than the LenSx®. Efficacy, safety and predictability were comparable with the two laser platforms.
