Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of LASIK to treat a residual refractive error after Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) and Cataract Surgery in both virgin cornea’s and non-virgin cornea’s (patients who previously underwent a LASIK treatment (80% of non-virgin eyes) or RK (20% of non-virgin eyes) before their lens surgery). The excimer laser treatment was performed by the Schwind Amaris 750S excimer laser.
Setting:
Brussels Eye Doctors, private practice for cataract and refractive surgery, located in Brussels, Belgium.
Methods:
Retrospective study of cataract (902 eyes) and RLE (432 eyes) patients treated between August 2012 and December 2016, 106 non-virgin eyes, 1228 virgin eyes. The preoperative calculation of the power of the IOL in non-virgin eyes was made using both the historical method and the ASCRS calculator. 98 virgin eyes (7.9%) and 38 non-virgin eyes (35.8%) needed an excimer laser treatment to correct their residual myopia/astigmatism. In 8% of virgin eyes and in 5% of non-virgin eyes an extra LASIK enhancement was needed. A follow-up was made of BCVA, UCVA, refraction, per-and post-operative data and topography
Results:
116 out of 136 eyes were available for follow up at 1 month. After 1 Month: UCVA of 0.8 or better was obtained in 78% of eyes in the virgin cornea group and in 75% of eyes in the non-virgin cornea group. The residual spherical equivalent was within ± 0.5 Diopter in 84% of eyes in the virgin cornea group and in 78% of eyes in the non-virgin cornea group . For so far safety is concerned 7% of eyes lost 2 lines in the virgin cornea group (dryness), 3% of eyes lost 2 lines in the non-virgin cornea group.
Conclusions:
After RLE and Cataract surgery, 7.9% of virgin eyes and 35.8% of non-virgin eyes needed a LASIK retreatment to treat a residual refractive error. Treatment was performed with the Schwind Amaris 750S excimer laser and resulted in good visual results with a predictability higher in the virgin eyes group compared to the non-virgin eyes group.
