Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the opening tension of the haptics of different intraocular lenses (IOLs)

Setting:

Eye Clinic, University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy.

Methods:

15 IOLs were investigated: 9 three-piece IOLs with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) haptics, 6 single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs. The opening tension of the haptics was detected by means of a precision balance (HR 120 EC, A&D Instruments LTD, Japan). IOLs were mounted on a vertical feeding system able to reduce the distance between the contact point of the haptic and the floor of the balance. The changes of the tension values after the haptics opening were assessed at two different distances: 500µm and 1000µm.

Results:

The opening tension of the haptics was statistically significant higher in the IOLs with PMMA haptics than in the single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs. The latter demonstrated a viscoelastic behavior with a peculiar adaptation of the haptic to the stress applied.

Conclusions:

The haptic tension appeared to be material dependent. The viscoelastic behavior of the one-piece IOLs may suggest a gentler adaptation of the haptics to the capsular bag, with possible less stress to the bag and to the zonula.
