Abstract Details

Purpose:

Aim of the study is to evaluate the changes in CONTRAST SENSITIVITY (CS) in patient’s after SMALL INCISION LENTICULE EXTRACTION (SMILE). Primary objective is to analyse the mean changes in CONTRAST SENSITIVITY before and after the procedure.

Setting:

Study Design : A prospective, observational, comparative study. Sample Size : 100 eyes. All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon, Dr Ananth.D, at Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute, Coimbatore, India.

Methods:

Each individual satisfying the eligibility criteria is subjected to complete ophthalmic examination preoperatively, including UCVA,BCVA using Snellen’s chart, Contrast sensitivity (both Photopic and Mesopic) using Functional Acuity Contrast Test (FACT) at Spatial Frequency’s (SF’s) of 1.5,3,6,12 and 18 & a thorough Slit lamp examination. Post-operative Contrast Sensitivity is measured using the same method during subsequent followup at 1week, 1month, 3month, 6month & 12months along with patients UCVA & BCVA.

Results:

100 Eyes of 50 Patient’s (23 Males, 27 Females) with a mean age of 24.08±1.44 years were treated with SMILE, their Contrast Sensitivity was measured before and after the procedure, mean follow-up period being 12 months. At 1week follow up a significant decrease in CS is noted at all SF’s (p < .001) At 1month the CS is significantly less at SF’s 3 (p = .005), 6 , 12 and 18 (p < .001) At 3month CS decrease is significant only at higher SF’s like 12 and 18 (p < .001)

Conclusions:

Based on the study results it appears that SMILE causes a decrease in Contrast Sensitivity particularly at Higher Spatial Frequencies of CPD 12 & 18 during the initial 3month period. However, there is no significant difference in Contrast Sensitivity after 6 months of the procedure, as compared to Pre-operative values. While most patient’s achieved the Pre-operative Contrast Sensitivity within 3 months following the procedure, small number of patient’s did so in 6 months.
