Purpose:
To study the visual and refractive outcomes following SMILE MONOVISION in presbyopic myopes.
Setting:
Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore, India
Methods:
Fifteen( 15) presbyopic patients with mean age of 46.6 years with Simple or Compound Myopic Astigmatism with Presbyopia who were comfortable with monovision trial were included.
Results:
At 6 months,CDVA binocularly was 0.10±0.09 logMAR.SE in dominant eye was -1.25 ± 1.0, and in non-dominant eye was -1.54±0.67 D. The fine stereopsis improved from 117±68 to 107 ±75 cycles per degree.Salzburg Reading Desk showed improvement in corrected reading speeds from 122±29 to 127±26 words per minute (WPM)at 40 cm.The reading speed for intermediate range at 60 cms and 80 cm improved from 112±30 to 126 ±25 and115±23 to 121 ±19 WPM respectively.There was no significant loss of contrast sensitivity after surgery. 14 patients reported 100% independence ,one patient underwent enhancement .
Conclusions:
At 6 months, monovision with SMILE showed improvement in the near and intermediate range vision with excellent patient satisfaction. This modality may be used as an alternate treatment option for myopic patients in the presbyopic age group requiring spectacle independence.
