Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the multifocal excimer laser corneal ablation profile (Supracor procedure) in hyperopic presbyopia with 12 month after laser treatment.

Setting:

Retrospective case review of patients with hyperopia who underwent Supracor excimer laser treatment on both eyes for presbyopia. All surgeries were performed at the facilities of Tecnolaser Clinic Vision (Seville, SPAIN). And the statistical analysis of the data was carried out at the University of Seville (SPAIN)

Methods:

This study evaluated 29 patients, wherein 58 eyes underwent Supracor excimer laser treatment (317 Teneo Platform, Bausch & Lomb) on both eyes for presbyopia correction from year January 2016 to March 2016. The main outcome measures were monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), patient satisfaction, manifest refraction after surgery and retreatment rates were reported from baseline to 12 months.

Results:

Preoperatively, mean manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) of all eyes that underwent Supracor was +2.05 ± 1.19 D (Dominant eye) and +2.17 ± 1.24 D (Not Dominant eye) with mean uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) of 0.50 ± 0.17 and 0.26 ± 0.18, respectively. At 12 months postoperatively, mean MRSE was −0.16 ± 0.43 D (dominant eye) and -0.16 ± 0.76 (Not dominant eye) with mean UDVA, and UNVA of 0.97 ± 0.04 D and 0.85 ± 0.13, respectively.

Conclusions:

Significant differences in binocular UDVA (p ≤ 0.01), and UNVA (p ≤ 0.01) in postoperative were seen. In addition changes in MRSE were statistically significant (p ≤ 0.01). Supracor excimer laser algorithm is safe and effective for the treatment of presbyopia in hyperopes. Bilateral Supracor treatments yielded similarly good binocular vision outcomes. As a clinician, we recommend careful patient selection, managing, expectations and critical decision-making to increase the satisfaction rate of patients seeking any form of presbyopia LASIK treatment such as Supracor.
