Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the presence of snake-like chromatin cells protein (related to eye rubbing) in patients with keratoconus, allergic conjunctivitis and controls.
Setting:
Research Department, Oftalmosalud Instituto de Ojos, Lima , Peru
Methods:
Prospective cohort study included 193 eyes between January 2015 and July 2016, 86 new keratoconus diagnosis, 88 controls and 19-allergy conjunctivitis diagnosis underwent impression cytology carried out on the upper conjunctiva using Strips of nitro acetate cellulose filter papers. The specimens for morphological characterization were stained with a combination of periodic acid-Schiff and Gill’smodified Papanicolaou stains to detect the presence of snake-like chromatin cells protein, also morphological characterization of dry eye and allergy conjunctivitis was assessed. Wilcoxon test as non-parametric and T-student test as parametric alternative were used, Fisher exact test to detect risk factors associated to progression.
Results:
Snake-like chromatin cells protein was observed in 4.65% (12/86) of the keratoconus eyes. The presence of Snake-like chromatin cells protein didn´t showed significant correlation with severity of the keratoconus (r= 0.32, p=0.59), however it showed significant correlation between frequency of eye rubbing and intensity of eye rubbing (r= 0.84, p=0.04). Morphological characterization of dry eye was present in 79.06% (68/86) of the eyes.
Conclusions:
Keratoconus can be present in eyes that did not had expression Snake-like chromatin cells protein with or without eye rubbing. The presence of the Snake-like chromatin cells is greater in eyes with frequent and intense eye rubbing.
