Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate and compare refractive outcomes of astigmatism correction after wavefront-guided laser in situ keratomileusis (WFG LASIK) and small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).
Setting:
Magrabi Eye Hospital - Jeddah
Methods:
This comparative study enrolled a total of 89 eyes that had undergone SMILE (43 eyes) and wavefront-guided LASIK (46 eyes). Preoperative astigmatism cylindrical diopters were in range from -1.00 to -5.00 diopters [D]). Study parameters included UDVA, CDVA, refractive cylinder and astigmatism correction index (ACI) the ratio of SIA to TIA. All subjects completed the 6-month follow-up.
Results:
No significant differences were found in the target-induced astigmatism between SMILE and WFG LASIK. At the 6-month, the mean spherical diopters in WFG LASIK and SMILE were 0.17 D ± 0.37 D° and 0.16 D ± 0.45 D°, respectively. Mean cylindrical in WFG LASIK and SMILE were -0.38 D ± 0.32 D° and -0.47 D ± 0.35 D°, respectively. Angle of error within ± 5 degrees was achieved in 75% of WFG LASIK and in 65% of SMILE. Mean astigmatic correction index was 0.86±0.18 and 0.85±0.21 in WFG and SMILE respectively.96% of eyes had UDVA of 20/40 in both groups
Conclusions:
Both procedures showed preferable outcomes in the correction of moderate and high astigmatism. Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) was safe, effective, and predictable.
