Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the optical quality, interface healing and patient satisfaction following a “no- dissection” technique ( lenticuloschisis) in which the lenticule is peeled off the interface with a microforceps and the conventional “dissection” technique of lenticule management in ReLEx SMILE

Setting:

Nethradhama Eye Hospital, Bangalore

Methods:

100 eyes from 50 patients undergoing bilateral myopic ReLEx SMILE procedure were randomised to receive “lenticuloschisis” in one eye and “dissection” technique in the contralateral eye. Eyes were analysed into two groups: Group 1(lenticuloschisis) and group 2(dissection). Both the groups were matched in terms of preoperative visual acuity and refraction.

Results:

At day 1 post-op, the mean UDVA in group1 was -0.057± 0.12LogMAR compared to -0.038±0.10 LogMAR in group 2 (p=0.39). Mean day 1(MTF) was 0.372±0.09 in group1 and 0.366 ± 0.08 in group2 (p=0.78), where as the Strehl ratio was 0.147±0.13 and 0.135±0.11 in group 1 and 2 respectively(p=0.66).The contrast sensitivity scores(FACT) were marginally higher in group1 than group 2 but were not significantly different(p>0.05).At day 1, 46% patients preferred the eye undergoing lenticuloschisis whereas 34% preferred the dissection eye.At 3 months, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups for any parameters.

Conclusions:

Both lenticuloschisis and conventional dissection techniques provided comparable visual and optical quality results. However, the no-dissection technique appeared to result in better patient satisfaction at first day post-op.
