Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes and subjective quality of vision achieved 3 months and 12 months following bilateral implantation of a rotationally asymmetric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Cathedral Eye Clinic, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK

Methods:

The study enrolled 100 patients (200 eyes) implanted with the Lentis Mplus multifocal IOL after phacoemulsification. Patients were assessed 3 months and 12 months postoperatively. Refraction, uncorrected (UDVA) and best-corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, uncorrected intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuities, and a quality of vision (QoV) questionnaire were evaluated at each postoperative assessment.

Results:

The mean monocular UDVA was -0.06 ± 0.10 logMAR at 3 months and -0.05 ± 0.10 logMAR at 12 months (P= .121). The mean monocular UIVA was 0.37 ± 0.10 logMAR and 0.39 ± 0.12 logMAR at the respective postoperative assessments (P= .176). At the 3 month postoperative assessment the mean monocular UNVA was 0.14 ± 0.11 logMAR and 0.15 ± 0.10 logMAR at the 12 month assessment (P= .066). There was a significant improvement in quality of vision between the 3 month and 12 month postoperative assessments (P=< .001).

Conclusions:

The asymmetric multifocal IOL provided a high level of postoperative quality of vision at the early postoperative assessment with further improvement at 12 months where patients reported a significantly enhanced quality of vision score. The IOL displayed excellent distance, intermediate and near visual acuity at both postoperative assessments.
