Purpose:
To compare aberration profile of two multifocal IOLs (mfIOLs) and to evaluate the effect of postoperative angle kappa on higher order aberrations.
Setting:
Semmelweis University, Department of Ophthalmology, Budapest, Hungary.
Methods:
50 eyes of 25 patients were enrolled in this study. During cataract surgery Medicontur Bi-Flex 677MY multifocal IOL with neutral aspheric design was implanted into 22 eyes of 11 patients and Alcon Acrysof ReSTOR SN6AD1 aspheric multifocal IOL was implanted into 28 eyes of 14 patients. 3 months after surgery total, corneal and internal higher order aberrations and angle kappa were measured using a wavefront-analyser (OPD-Scan (Nidek Inc)).
Results:
There was no difference between mfIOLs regarding RMS of total, corneal and internal higher order aberrations (p›0.05). Spherical aberration was significantly lower in the ReSTOR group (internal: p=0.003, total: p‹0.001). We found no difference in coma-like aberrations (p>0.05). There was no difference in postoperative angle kappa between the two groups (p=0.559). After implantation of Bi-Flex IOLs we found no correlation between angle kappa and internal spherical aberration (p=0.71). Significant correlation was determined between these parameters in the ReSTOR group (r=0.47 p=0.012).
There was no correlation between angle kappa and coma-like aberrations in any study groups (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
Higher postoperative angle kappa values have negative influence on optical performance of mfIOLs with negative spherical aberration profile, while similar phenomenon could be not observed in the case of mfIOLs with neutral aspheric design.
